When Juan de Garay founded the city in 1580, according to the Leyes de Indias (laws passed by the Spanish government), he chose to build the Cabildo. This spot, which would constitute the seat of the city government and the justice administration of the city.
It was the venue of the “Revolución de Mayo” in 1810 (which marked the end of the Spanish ruling), when the Primera Junta (first government) was formed.
Currently, it constitutes the “Museo Histórico Nacional del Cabildo y la Revolución de Mayo” (national historic museum of the Cabildo and the Revolution of May), and is venue of the “Comisión Nacional de Monumentos, Paseos y Museos Históricos” (national commission of historic monuments, promenades and museums).
