The whale watching season in Patagonia runs from May to early December. September and October are the best months
Mating rituals are the powerful force that summons the whales. This wonderful natural spectacle repeats and grows every year, thanks to the conservation efforts carried out by various local organizations.

The Patagonian ecosystem provides the perfect conditions for this crucial stage. During these months, the region’s cold, nutrient-rich waters become a natural maternity ward, where calves can grow stronger and learn to swim alongside their mothers before embarking on their long journey to feeding grounds near Antarctica.
A whale watching excursion
First, you have to travel to Puerto Madryn. Whale watching is done by embarking from Puerto Pirámides, on the Valdés Peninsula. The companies authorized by the Province to do so take all necessary precautions so that this activity does not generate an environmental impact and does not alter the behavior of the whales.

The tour begins by skirting the coast in different directions, and then heading one or two miles offshore to meet the Southern Right Whales.

The first stop is usually at La Lobería (the sea lion colony), located perpendicular to Puerto Pirámides, home to about 2,000 individuals.

Navigating for the sighting along the coast also allows you to observe several colonies of cormorants and other coastal birds.

This coastal environment is a delicate balance of life. While sailing, expert guides share their knowledge about local biodiversity, explaining how each species plays a vital role. Furthermore, they use the journey to teach visitors how to identify whales by the unique callosities on their heads, horny formations that act as true fingerprints for each individual.
Then the boat moves away from the coast, the engines are stopped, and for a moment there is a silence broken only by the mixed sounds of penguins, seagulls, terns, and cormorants. It is a moment of waiting… Someone spots a large concentration of birds in the distance.

The boat gets closer and suddenly, when the whole group is attentive, something silver and white jumps next to the boat, and the loud noise of a body hitting the surface of the sea is heard…

It is a moment of euphoria. Everyone shouts, they speak in various languages, the cries of children mingle… And as if to complete the party, dolphins never fail to show up to perform their acrobatics and jumps in complete freedom alongside the whales.
This experience transcends simple tourism to become a deep connection with wild nature. Returning to the port after having witnessed this majestic marine ballet from just a few meters away leaves an indelible mark, reminding us of the urgent need to preserve the purity of our oceans and protect these gentle giants so they keep coming back year after year.
