Cuento de Navidad

La Navidad en la Patagonia está llena de magia, de mitos, de leyendas. Como en todo el mundo y, quizás, como en todos los mundos… Vayan con esta historia futurista de Ray Bradbury nuestros deseos de amor y felicidad y sueños cumplidos para el próximo año.

Las grutasEl día siguiente sería Navidad y, mientras los tres se dirigían a la estación de naves espaciales, el padre y la madre estaban preocupados. Era el primer vuelo que el niño realizaría por el espacio, su primer viaje en cohete, y deseaban que fuera lo más agradable posible. Cuando en la aduana los obligaron a dejar el regalo porque pasaba unos pocos kilos del peso máximo permitido y el arbolito con sus hermosas velas blancas, sintieron que les quitaban algo muy importante para celebrar esa fiesta. El niño esperaba a sus padres en la terminal. Cuando éstos llegaron, murmuraban algo contra los oficiales interplanetarios.

-¿Qué haremos?
-Nada, ¿qué podemos hacer?
-¡Al niño le hacía tanta ilusión el árbol!
La sirena aulló, y los pasajeros fueron hacia el cohete de Marte. La madre y el padre fueron Espaciolos últimos en entrar. El niño iba entre ellos, pálido y silencioso.
-Ya se me ocurrirá algo -dijo el padre.
-¿Qué…? -preguntó el niño.

El cohete despegó y se lanzó hacia arriba al espacio oscuro. Lanzó una estela de fuego y dejó atrás la Tierra, un 24 de diciembre de 2052, para dirigirse a un lugar donde no había tiempo, donde no había meses, ni años, ni horas. Los pasajeros durmieron durante el resto del primer “día”. Cerca de medianoche, hora terráquea según sus relojes neoyorquinos, el niño despertó y dijo:
-Quiero mirar por el ojo de buey.
-Todavía no -dijo el padre-. Más tarde.
-Quiero ver dónde estamos y a dónde vamos.
-Espera un poco -dijo el padre.

El padre había estado despierto, volviéndose a un lado y a otro, pensando en la fiesta de Navidad, en los regalos y en el árbol con sus velas blancas que había tenido que dejar en la aduana. Al fin creyó haber encontrado una idea que, si daba resultado, haría que el viaje fuera feliz y maravilloso.
-Hijo mío -dijo-, dentro de medía hora será Navidad.
EstrellasLa madre lo miró consternada; había esperado que de algún modo el niño lo olvidaría. El rostro del pequeño se iluminó; le temblaron los labios.
-Sí, ya lo sé. ¿Tendré un regalo? ¿Tendré un árbol? Me lo prometieron.
-Sí, sí. todo eso y mucho más -dijo el padre.
-Pero… -empezó a decir la madre.
-Sí -dijo el padre-. Sí, de veras. Todo eso y más, mucho más. Perdón, un momento. Vuelvo pronto.
Los dejó solos unos veinte minutos. Cuando regresó, sonreía.
-Ya es casi la hora.
-¿Puedo tener un reloj? -preguntó el niño.
Le dieron el reloj, y el niño lo sostuvo entre los dedos: un resto del tiempo arrastrado por el fuego, el silencio y el momento insensible.
-¡Navidad! ¡Ya es Navidad! ¿Dónde está mi regalo?
-Ven, vamos a verlo -dijo el padre, y tomó al niño de la mano.

TrifidaSalieron de la cabina, cruzaron el pasillo y subieron por una rampa. La madre los seguía.
-No entiendo.
-Ya lo entenderás -dijo el padre-. Hemos llegado.
Se detuvieron frente a una puerta cerrada que daba a una cabina. El padre llamó tres veces y luego dos, empleando un código. La puerta se abrió, llegó luz desde la cabina, y se oyó un murmullo de voces.
-Entra, hijo.
-Está oscuro.
-No tengas miedo, te llevaré de la mano. Entra, mamá.

Entraron en el cuarto y la puerta se cerró; el cuarto realmente estaba muy oscuro. Ante ellos se abría un inmenso ojo de vidrio, el ojo de buey, una ventana de metro y medio de alto por dos de ancho, por la cual podían ver el espacio. El niño se quedó sin aliento, maravillado. Estrellas y velasDetrás, el padre y la madre contemplaron el espectáculo, y entonces, en la oscuridad del cuarto, varias personas se pusieron a cantar.
-Feliz Navidad, hijo -dijo el padre.

Resonaron los viejos y familiares villancicos; el niño avanzó lentamente y aplastó la nariz contra el frío vidrio del ojo de buey. Y allí se quedó largo rato, simplemente mirando el espacio, la noche profunda y el resplandor, el resplandor de cien mil millones de maravillosas velas blancas.
