Gorge of Humahuaca

This excursion will not only take you to a landscape that will remain in your memory forever, but it will also make you live one of the most impressive experiences of your life. Not by coincidence the Gorge of Humahuaca was declared "World Heritage Site" in 2003 on the basis of "Cultural Landscape" criteria. Ten thousand years of history are still alive in this spectacular 155 kilometer valley, that allows transit through the high and inaccessible Andean Puna.

The Incas used it as route of conquest during their empire, the Spanish who came later, adapted their rock roads and continued using their little villages as compulsory stops in their trade routes of Alto Peru.
To visit today Tumbaya, Purmamarca, Maimará, Tilcara and other typical towns is to feel like part of a millenarian history, to enter in a different time.

While going through these towns you will visit: the ‘Pucará de Tilcara’ and its Archaeological Museum; in Uquía, the typical church; and in Purmamarca, the Hill of the Seven Colors. When arriving in Humahuaca you will get to know the Independence Monument and the Church, you will also take a walk by its narrow and cobblestoned streets, with streetlights and adobe houses, an impeccable sample of colonial times, when it was one of the most important commercial centers of the route.
Lunch is not included and in the afternoon, you will return to Salta.

Note:
The Gorge is to 2939 meters above sea level; therefore, it is recommended to walk slowly in order to avoid the unpleasant symptoms of the "apunamiento", a malaise caused by the low oxygen levels.
