On the shores of San Mat\u00edas Gulf, in the province of R\u00edo Negro, stretches Islote Lobos National Park, a natural area designated as a national park in 2022 after jurisdiction was transferred from the provincial to the national government. Its protection, however, dates back to 1977, when the province incorporated it into its system of natural areas.<\/p>\n The park covers 20,000 hectares (77 square miles) \u20145,000 on land and 15,000 marine\u2014 and lies 31 miles (50 km) from Sierra Grande, near Playas Doradas<\/a>. The archipelago is made up of five islands: Islote Lobos, Ortiz Norte and Ortiz Sur, Rodondo, Isla de los P\u00e1jaros, and La Pastosa. The latter, the easiest to access, is also home to the largest colony of Magellanic penguins.<\/p>\n The park\u2019s wildlife richness is reflected in a remarkable variety of marine and terrestrial species. South American sea lions inhabit the area year-round, while Magellanic penguins arrive between September and March to complete their breeding cycle.<\/p>\n Between June and November, southern right whales approach these waters, sometimes accompanied by orcas and dolphins, which can be spotted at different times of the year.<\/p>\n Birdlife finds here an exceptional gathering point, with hundreds of species recorded, from red knots and terns to cormorants, albatrosses, and petrels. Marine wealth is completed by fish, mollusks, and crustaceans that sustain this Atlantic ecosystem.<\/p>\n Entrance to the park is free of charge and organized through different modalities. At low tide, it is possible to reach the southern sector, near Playas Doradas, on foot, with or without the accompaniment of authorized guides. During high tide, kayaks allow paddling along the Salado stream mouth out to the sea. From Playas Doradas, boats also depart to circumnavigate the islets for a full view of marine fauna.
