Towards the right, it is protected by the imposing Mountain Range of the Wind (\u201cCordillera de Viento\u201d), which extends north to south until reaching the Domuyo volcano.<\/p>\n<p>Chos Malal has a rich history. It was the first capital of the Territory of Neuqu\u00e9n, which became a province in 1904. Its founder and its first governor was the General Olascoaga. Here existed a fort from which one of the advances of the \u201cConquest of the Desert\u201d campaign was launched, which today is marked by a turret across from the plaza.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5537\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5537\" style=\"width: 458px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5537\" src=\"https:\/\/www.patagonia-argentina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/acequias-historicas-en-chos-malal.jpg\" alt=\"Historic irrigation ditch in Chos Malal - Foto: neuquentur.gob.ar\" width=\"458\" height=\"318\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5537\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Historic irrigation ditch in Chos Malal &#8211; Foto: neuquentur.gob.ar<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Due to the town\u2019s strategic location, it is called \u201cthe key to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.patagonia-argentina.com\/i\/andina\/chos_malal\/norte_neuquino.php\">Northern Neuqu\u00e9n<\/a>\u201d:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There is a paved road that intersects routes 22 and 40 which unites this town with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patagonia-argentina.com\/i\/central\/neuquen\/neuquen.php\">the provincial capital<\/a>, 385 km away.<\/li>\n<li>Northwards, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patagonia-argentina.com\/i\/content\/especial\/ruta40.php\">route 40<\/a> unites Chos Malal with the province of Mendoza. It is only 130km away from the provincial border and approximately 200 more until Malarg\u00fce, the closest Mendozan city. The route is excellently maintained in Neuqu\u00e9n province; upon entering Mendoza the condition of the road becomes very bad. There, it is necessary to drive with extreme caution, as the there are areas of gravel, detours and parts with many potholes.<\/li>\n<li>Driving south, the same route 40 brings travelers to more traditional tourist centers, such as the villages of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patagonia-argentina.com\/i\/andina\/copahue\/copahue.php\">Copahue-Caviahue<\/a> , and further south, with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patagonia-argentina.com\/i\/andina\/junin\/junin.php\">Jun\u00edn de los Andes<\/a> and runs through the entire Neuqu\u00e9n lake district.<\/li>\n<li>Driving west, a gravel road in good conditions, provincial route 6, \u201cthe route of the Gendarme\u201d allows travelers, since 1998, access to Chile by the Pichach\u00e9n Pass, open only in the summer and only for private vehicles. This route reaches the nearby city of Los \u00c1ngeles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Today, Chos Malal is an urban center with the best that Northern Neuqu\u00e9n has to offer. <\/strong>It has approximately 20,000 inhabitants and offers all of the services that a traveler needs: hotels, restaurants, transport, medical attention, banks, etc.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5538\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5538\" style=\"width: 458px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5538\" src=\"https:\/\/www.patagonia-argentina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/museo-chos-malal-neuquentur.jpg\" alt=\"Museo Hist\u00f3rico de Chos Mala - Foto: neuquentur.gob.ar\" width=\"458\" height=\"344\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5538\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Museo Hist\u00f3rico de Chos Malal &#8211; Foto: neuquentur.gob.ar<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There are new neighborhoods, created by local and federal government spending, as well as the old adobe houses.
