If we add the fact that through the windows the legendary Patagonian landscape reveals, there is only one possible conclusion&#8230; We have to take this trip!<\/p>\n<h2>What you need to know:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>There are no train services that allow us to travel by train throughout Patagonia. Many travelers are enthusiastic about this idea but, at least for the moment, it is not possible.<\/li>\n<li>Except for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patagonia-argentina.com\/en\/el-tren-patagonico-del-atlantico-a-los-andes\/\">Patagonian Train<\/a> (Viedma\/Bariloche), the rest only operate as a Day Tour departing and returning to the same destination where the main station is.<\/li>\n<li>Distances are short and these Trains include either a Tourist Guide or Audioguide, Gift shops, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Tickets for these Tourist trains may be obtained in advance via a Travel Agency.<\/li>\n<li>During peak season (summer in the southern hemisphere) it is advisable to book in advance, especially for the Patagonian Train.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Patagonian Train<\/h2>\n<p>From the Atlantic to the Andes range, the Patagonia Train connects\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.patagonia-argentina.com\/i\/atlantica\/viedma_patagones\/viedmapat.php\">Viedma<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.patagonia-argentina.com\/en\/san-carlos-de-bariloche\">Bariloche<\/a>, along a route that borders\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.patagonia-argentina.com\/i\/central\/meseta\/meseta.php\">Meseta de Somuncura<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4997\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4997\" style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4997\" src=\"https:\/\/www.patagonia-argentina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG-20150109-WA0013-480x360.jpg\" alt=\"Tren Patag\u00f3nico en la estaci\u00f3n de Viedma\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4997\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Viedma Station &#8211; Patagonian Train<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>The Journey<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The train passes through several towns of the &#8220;Southern Line&#8221; of\u00a0R\u00edo Negro\u00a0Province: Valcheta, Sierra Colorada, Los Menucos Maquinchao, Ingeniero Jacobacci. It is\u00a0more than 800 kilometers along the Patagonian steppe.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4998\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4998\" style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4998\" src=\"https:\/\/www.patagonia-argentina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG-20150110-WA0006-480x360.jpg\" alt=\"Paisaje entre la estepa y la precordillera\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4998\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Between the steppe and the pre-Andes<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>Options &amp; services<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The train offers Tourist, First, Pullman and Cabins wagons. It also has car\u00a0trays so that passengers can ship their\u00a0car and travel comfortably to fully enjoy the saved energies upon arrival.<\/p>\n<p>On-board services include a dining wagon, with a menu of Patagonian specialties for dinner, cinema wagon (free for passengers on Cabins) and a Disco. The latter two services are not available in all configurations, ask\u00a0when purchasing the ticket.<\/p>\n<p>You need to make reservations in advance as places sell out quickly. See\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.trenpatagonico-sa.com.ar\/esp\/horarios.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Services and Schedules (in Spanish).<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>La Trochita<\/h2>\n<p>Also known as &#8220;Old Patagonian Express&#8221; this is the famous train of small gauge (75 cm. to be precise), with a steam locomotive built in 1922 as part of a project to link the Atlantic Ocean and\u00a0the Andes Range.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4999\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4999\" style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4999\" src=\"https:\/\/www.patagonia-argentina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/trochita-libros-de-viaje-480x360.jpg\" alt=\"La Trochita en la estaci\u00f3n Esquel\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4999\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">La Trochita at\u00a0Esquel Station<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>However\u00a0only the segment from\u00a0the Patagonian plateau to\u00a0the foothills of the Andes, between Ing. Jacobacci and Esquel was bulit (402 km), and its opening took place in 1945.<\/p>\n<p>This Train not only is a relic for its locomotives and wagons, but also for the architectural work of the track layout,\u00a0almost &#8220;handmade&#8221;. The workers had only pick and shovel, and some dynamite to perforate the mountain. The layout has more than 600 curves to prevent slopes from exceeding the capacity of the\u00a0locomotives. There are also several bridges and a tunnel near Rio Chico. A distance of 36 km across the steppe where a bridge crosses the Esquel stream and then the cord Nahuel Pan, the highest in this part of the Andes, is skirted. In the village of Nahuel Pan live many Mapuche descendants who are dedicated to cattle raising and also organize a crafts fair at the station, for each arrival of the little Train.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.patagonia-argentina.com\/i\/andina\/esquel\/cronica_trochita.php\">The journey<\/a>\u00a0itself is a captivating, moving and unique experience in the world. Make sure you <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patagonia-argentina.com\/i\/andina\/esquel\/cronica_trochita.php\">read this<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The\u00a0Train<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The biggest attraction is its locomotives Baldwin ( U.S. ) and Henschel ( Germany ) that are kept running as they originally left the factory. They operate on \u00a0fuel oil, a petroleum derivative and are driven by a boiler that produces steam and produces that \u00a0&#8220;chuff chuff&#8221; sound that makes it so special.<\/p>\n<p>It is called &#8220;Trochita&#8221; for its super narrow gauge of 75 centimeters, created for short stretches in the First World War. The enormous distance developed by this branch added to the difficult terrain that required it to move at low speed, gave birth to the need to have a dining car which is still part of the formations. Along with its passenger wagons they constitute museum pieces in perfect condition .<\/p>\n<p>These first and second class wagons retain details of the era, with leather and wooden seats, iron railings and the famous salamander inside, very useful for the cold winters in Patagonia and for the passengers, who used to heat water for \u201cmate\u201d and fix some fast food to eat while traveling&#8230;<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Panor\u00e1mica del recorrido de La Trochita\" src=\"https:\/\/www.patagonia-argentina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/esquel_panoramica_trochita-1-480x360.jpg\" alt=\"Panor\u00e1mica del recorrido de La Trochita\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Steam and Chugga-chugga motion&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Additional\u00a0attractions<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The Trochita has two museums; one in the station of El Mait\u00e9n, by the\u00a0general workshops and another at Esquel station, which retains a lot of mechanical parts, tools, office items, tickets and even a bicycle with a very special history&#8230;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What&#8217;s included in the ticket?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&#8211; R\/T journey either\u00a0from Esquel to Nahuel Pan or from\u00a0El Mait\u00e9n up to Thomae detour.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Guided tour of the Railroad Museum of Esquel or El Mait\u00e9n, depending on where you take the train.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Admission to photo exhibit at\u00a0Ex Parcel\u00a0Warehouse.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond this, we must bear in mind that El Mait\u00e9n it is a &#8220;town museum&#8221; rail. In addition, a photographic journey allows to know the history of the construction and use that was given originally to this train.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Journey<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Total length is some 7 km. long, bordering River\u00a0Pipo,\u00a0along what the last part of the original route was.<\/p>\n<p>The guides tell the history of the train and Ushuaia while through the large windows, the dense forest of lengas and\u00a0coihues of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patagonia-argentina.com\/en\/parque-nacional-tierra-del-fuego\">Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego<\/a>\u00a0reveals.<\/p>\n<p>Midway, in the Cascada de la Macarena Station, the train stops and passengers can get off for a short hike to a waterfall. There is also a reconstruction of a Yamana village.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere on the tour you can see part of the forest cleared by prisoners.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the trip, in the National Park Station, passengers can choose to return or continue with a tour inside the National Park.
