
{"id":3502,"date":"2013-03-13T11:39:57","date_gmt":"2013-03-13T14:39:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patagonia-argentina.com\/?p=3502"},"modified":"2020-12-30T16:21:03","modified_gmt":"2020-12-30T19:21:03","slug":"presente-aborigen-patagonia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patagonia-argentina.com\/en\/current-situation-aborigines-patagonia\/","title":{"rendered":"Current situation of Aboriginal people"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<h2><em>Today the\u00a0aboriginal ethnic group\u00a0with the most\u00a0descendants\u00a0in Patagonia is\u00a0the\u00a0Mapuche.\u00a0We present you\u00a0a brief\u00a0summary of the living conditions and\u00a0current distribution.<\/em><\/h2>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  title=\"Rural school in a Mapuche community\" src=\"\/images\/somuncura_escuela_rural.jpg\" alt=\"Rural school in a Mapuche community\" width=\"240\" height=\"170\" align=\"right\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Mapuche indigenous population is concentrated between the central zone and the pre-Andean range in the Provinces of Neuqu\u00e9n, R\u00edo Negro and Chubut.<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nTheir standard of living is lower than the average in other Patagonian zones, since the ecological characteristics and limited resources convert it into a marginal area.<\/p>\n<p>This is directly reflected in the basic social infrastructure for the welfare of the population. <strong>There are a few schools, lodges and hospitals; recreation possibilities are practically nonexistent. <\/strong>The general assistance is channeled through the municipalities, as the water supply and electricity, transportation and communications.<\/p>\n<p><strong>At present, there is an effort to revert this situation. <\/strong>Schools have been inaugurated and now 75% of all areas occupied by indigenous groups have primary schools with a free lunch service. On the other hand, there are special lodgings to house children from distant rural areas.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 5px;\" title=\"Valcheta Valley on the edge of the Plateau Somuncur\u00e1.\" src=\"\/images\/valcheta_vista_valle.jpg\" alt=\"Valcheta Valley on the edge of the Plateau Somuncur\u00e1.\" width=\"240\" height=\"170\" align=\"left\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Teachers are involved in house visits to encourage school attendance or the stay at the lodges for the majority of the children, what would likely improve the illiteracy and drop-out rates.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It is estimated that 38% of adults are illiterate and almost 70% have not completed primary school. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The standard of living is low in the urban areas but drops in rural areas and even more in indigenous communities or reserves.<\/p>\n<p>The access to these places is generally difficult in winter, and <strong>on some occasions<\/strong> <strong>they remain isolated for months, due to the lack of transportation and the use of the horse as the most common means of mobility.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The population is quite dispersed. <\/strong> The rural areas are distributed in a star pattern and communications take place with the urban centers and not among themselves, since trade and purchase of subsistence goods are done there.<\/p>\n<p>They buy the goods from peddlers, since some communities do not have stores.<\/p>\n<p>There is no cultural, social or recreational equipment and job opportunities are nonexistent.<strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/ovejas.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"157\" align=\"right\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The only economic activity is the sheep and goat raising, and vegetable gardens for familiar consumption when the natural water sources allow it, which is infrequent.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Most of the communities are scattered and access becomes difficult; however, the Quila Quina community in the Province of Neuqu\u00e9n, can be visited.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today the\u00a0aboriginal ethnic group\u00a0with the most\u00a0descendants\u00a0in Patagonia is\u00a0the\u00a0Mapuche.\u00a0We present you\u00a0a brief\u00a0summary of the living conditions and\u00a0current distribution.
