It is enough to say that the\u00a0<strong>book he wrote about his experiences<\/strong>\u00a0is called\u00a0<strong><em>Shipwrecked<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0. . . although he set course for R\u00edo de la Plata he landed in Brazil and <strong>had to walk to Paraguay<\/strong>, where the spaniards had escaped from the Indians.<\/p>\n<p>This march\u00a0<strong>was ripped out of the<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>script of a Hollywood action movie<\/strong>. Thousands of\u00a0<strong>disasters,\u00a0<\/strong>natural and man made,\u00a0<strong>Indian wars\u00a0<\/strong>and then<strong>\u00a0alliances with tribes<\/strong>\u00a0that helped him cross the jungle. And that is how in\u00a0<strong>August of 1541<\/strong>\u00a0he discovered the waterfalls, \u201cwhere the water hits the ground with such force that it can be heard for from faraway, and the mist is so tall that it could easily cover two ships\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In the\u00a0<strong>Guaran\u00ed language<\/strong>, still spoken by the Indians who inhabit the region (and it is the second official language of Paraguay)\u00a0<strong>Iguaz\u00fa means \u201cbig water\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This was only the discovery by white men.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.patagonia-argentina.com\/i\/iguazu\/cataratas\/cronologia.php\"><strong>Many years would pass<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0until settlers populated the area.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The waterfalls were\u00a0discovered in 1541 by Adelantado Alvar N\u00fa\u00f1ez Cabeza de Vaca.
