It flows gently down many kilometers of flat land, towards the southwest, before reaching the\u00a0<strong>Paran\u00e1 River<\/strong>, where its course changes dramatically.\u00a0<strong>Small islands<\/strong>\u00a0begin to create rapids and \u201cwhite water\u201d and the current gathers speed, causing the river to split off into smaller ones. But it soon reaches a\u00a0<strong>gigantic drop of<\/strong>f, which was\u00a0<strong>caused by an geological fault\u00a0<\/strong>hundreds of thousands years earlier. This precipice, added to the smaller rivers we described earlier, creates a<strong>giant system of waterfalls<\/strong>, with\u00a0<strong>more than 270 falls arranged in a giant fan, each between 40 and 90 meters high<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fact:<\/strong>\u00a0when the falls were born almost 200 thousand years ago, the falls were located where the Paran\u00e1 and Iguaz\u00fa, where today you will find the union of the three frontiers. But\u00a0<strong>due to the process of erosion, it has\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 5px;\" title=\"Devil's Throat\" src=\"https:\/\/www.patagonia-argentina.com\/images\/Igr_Garganta4.jpg\" alt=\"Devil's Throat\" width=\"170\" height=\"240\" align=\"left\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" \/>moved back 23 kilometers from its original point of origin<\/strong>. It is believed that\u00a0<strong>the relocation will continue<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>largest fall<\/strong>\u00a0is the\u00a0<strong>Devil\u2019s Throat\u00a0<\/strong>(la Garganta del Diablo) located at the main channel of the river. The fall has its\u00a0<strong>origin in Uni\u00f3n<\/strong>, which is located\u00a0<strong>on the boarder of Brazil and Argentina<\/strong>, it is\u00a0<strong>80 meters tall<\/strong>\u00a0and the spray created by the waterfall is<strong>visible from 7 kilometers away<\/strong>. Other important falls are\u00a0<strong>the Alvar N\u00fa\u00f1ez<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>the Two Sisters<\/strong>\u00a0(Dos Hermanas) which has a natural pool 8 meters deep,<strong>the Bosetti<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>the Chico Alf\u00e9rez<\/strong>\u00a0that break into two.
