Plaza de Mayo (Mayo Square)

Address: Balcarce-Rivadavia-Bolívar-Irigoyen s/n – Monserrat

It has been declared National Historic Place, having been the central core back in 1580, when it became Juan de Garay’s place of choice, at the time of the foundation of Buenos Aires, for the erection of the main buildings, namely the church (nowadays the Cathedral), the Cabildo and the Fort, where the government House (“Casa Rosada”) was later built. From here, the planning of the city started, and so did further constructions.
It has witnessed the country’s most important historic events, both social and political. Mainly during crisis, mostly for demonstrations, and sometimes for celebrations as well, this is the place where Argentines gather spontaneously with the “a la plaza” (to THE square) motto, as the main character in their history.
