The Sub-Tropical Forest

The Sub-Tropical Forest, Puerto IguazúAlthough the jewel of Iguazú are the waterfalls, the park is also the home of the most diverse eco-system in Argentina. This sub-tropical rain forest is found in southern Brazil, eastern Paraguay and the northeast of Argentina. Today, due to the exploitation of the forest, there has been a 6% reduction in the land it covers.

Many factors have combined to create this unique ecosystem: the subtropical weather, the abundant rain, the type of soil. The result is an ecosystem complex and harmonic, with giant trees and tiny insects, each part of the system completing a special function.

The sub-tropical forest moderates the weather patterns, protecting its inhabitants from extreme heat and maintains the humidity necessary for the over 2000 species of flora to flourish.

All of this vegetation creates the perfect refuge for animals of all shapes and sizes. There are over 448 species of birds, 80 mammals and numerous fish and reptiles. And butterflies and moths dot the sky.
