Las Lajas, Pino Hachado
and Loncopue
Leaving Zapala on National Route 22, you will
reach Las Lajas after 55 km. The main activity here is farming and
cattle raising as well as production of mineral and sparkling water.
You can visit the local
museum and share some of the local cultural activities.
A few km. from Las
Lajas you will find the most important cavern system of the Argentine
south, "Cuchillo Cura", which must be visited with a guide due to
the danger of collapse.
Route 22 leads to the
international pass to Chile, Pino Hachado. This is an area of
extraordinary beauty with extensive valleys and attractive vegetation
among creeks.
There is a coffee shop
near the Gendarmería post and a park with excellent ski
slopes in winter. From Las Lajas and taking route 21, you will find
Loncopué with an important indigenous population. Their crafts
can be purchased at the local fair on Saturdays and Sundays.
Thirty Km. of Loncopué
you find Chenque Pehuén with beautiful araucaria forests,
snowcapped mountains and capricious rock formations.
