Cajón de Hualcupén
and Copahue Provincial Park and Caviahue
At 22 km. of the crossing of routes 22 and
26 the Riscos Bayos can be viewed. Due to erosion they resemble
huge buildings of different shapes.
After crossing the bridge over Hualcupén Creek different
canyons appear bordering the road: Cajón del Hualcupén
and Cajón Chico.
Ahead you will travel through a beautiful road surrounded by pehuenes
until you get to the bridge over Río Agrio where the pavement
ends and you immediately reach Caviahue.
Caviahue, that in mapuche dialect means "meeting place", contrasts
with the lunar landscape of Copahue since it is sprinkled with creeks,
innumerable waterfalls and an araucaria forest that reflects its
particular features on the waters of Lake Caviahue.
Due to a curious climatologic phenomenon you will be able to
enjoy Caviahue year round, since temperatures are ideal in summer
and winter alike. Its clear atmosphere and beautiful scenery makes
this place a privileged site for a reparatory rest.
The Caviahue Provincial Park was created in
1941 to protect and preserve the araucaria forests in its natural
environment. This species constitute a distinctive feature of the
park, in spite of occupying a small area in the vicinity of Lake
Caviahue and in the Río Blanco valley. They are pure araucaria
forests occupying slopes and rocky outcrops below 1,800 meters
above sea level.
